Looking up at Tsutenkaku Tower with a zoo right next door — that combination is pretty unique to Shinsekai. If you’re traveling with kids, Tennoji Zoo slots neatly into a day that also covers shooting galleries and kushikatsu for the grown-ups, and that pairing isn’t talked about nearly enough.
I’m Kei Hasumi, Chief Travel Auditor at HOTEL CHOICE GUIDE. Here’s what we found on Tennoji Zoo’s basics, access from Shinsekai, and hotels that work well for a family trip. Admission and hours change over time, so we’ve marked this as “accurate as of writing” and recommend confirming with the official site before you go.

Tennoji Zoo basics (accurate as of writing)
Tennoji Zoo is run by a local independent administrative agency in Tennoji-ku, Osaka. Standard hours are 9:30am-5:00pm (last entry 4:00pm), with some sources indicating extended hours to 6:00pm on weekends/holidays in May and September. It’s closed Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday), with occasional additional closures (sources: osaka-info.jp, JAZA 2024 document).
Admission pricing is inconsistent across our sources — some list ¥800 for adults, others (an older document) list ¥500. Children living/attending school outside Osaka City pay ¥200; children living/attending school in Osaka City, and preschoolers, enter free. Osaka City residents 65+ and disability-certificate holders (plus one caregiver) also enter free with ID. Prices change, so please verify on the official site before your visit.
Over 100 years of history, and what to see
Tennoji Zoo opened on January 1, 1915, making it over 110 years old (it marked its 100th anniversary in 2015). You’ll sometimes see it called “Japan’s oldest zoo” — that’s not accurate. English Wikipedia lists it as the third zoo built in Japan, so “one of Japan’s older zoos” is the more honest framing.
Highlights include the African Savanna Zone (lions, spotted hyenas, reticulated giraffes, black rhinos, hippos), Asian elephants, and “Chimpanzee Base,” which opened in spring 2025. There’s also a Humboldt penguin and California sea lion area, and a petting zone with sheep, goats, and guinea pigs — good for younger kids. (Sources: English Wikipedia and secondary travel sites; confirm current exhibits on the official site, since animal collections do change.)
Getting there from Shinsekai / Tsutenkaku
The zoo has several entrances, but coming from Shinsekai or Tsutenkaku, the “Shinsekai Gate” is your closest option. Nearest stations are Osaka Metro Dobutsuen-mae Station (Midosuji/Sakaisuji lines), Ebisucho Station (Sakaisuji line), and JR/Nankai Shin-Imamiya Station. The official page lists roughly a 5-10 minute walk from each station (10-15 minutes if you need elevator access). From Exit 1 of Dobutsuen-mae Station, it’s about a 5-minute walk to the Shinsekai Gate.
We couldn’t find an exact walking distance from Tsutenkaku Tower itself to the gate — both official and secondary sources leave this unstated. “A few minutes’ walk from Tsutenkaku” is a fair description, but we’d recommend timing it yourself if precision matters to your schedule. There’s no dedicated zoo parking lot; nearby options include the underground lot at Tennoji Park.
Wheelchair rentals are available (5 units at the Shinsekai Gate, 4 at the Tennoji Park gate, per the official page, though quantities may change). We couldn’t confirm stroller rental or coin locker availability — worth checking the official site in advance if either matters for your trip.
For families: a hotel near both the zoo and Tsutenkaku
Traveling with young kids means every extra train ride adds friction. Basing yourself in Shinsekai — walkable to both Tennoji Zoo and Tsutenkaku — keeps the day’s logistics simple.
